Rising costs deepen uncertainty for North Dakota farmers
Higher diesel and fertilizer costs are colliding with trade tensions and uneven growing conditions, making harvest and future planning more difficult for North Dakota farmers.
North Dakota farmers are heading into harvest with diesel prices above $5 per gallon, fertilizer costs still elevated and renewed trade tensions with Canada adding another layer of uncertainty.
In this episode of The Backstory, NDNC reporter Michael Standaert and host Sabrina Halvorson discuss how those pressures are affecting farmers and why the consequences extend beyond the farm.

“The thing I heard from everybody is uncertainty. All these things just add uncertainty for farmers, and it just makes decision-making more and more difficult.” - Michael Standaert, North Dakota News Cooperative reporter
The effects will not be the same for every operation. Farmers who secured diesel and fertilizer earlier may be in a stronger position, while others face substantially higher costs at harvest. Yields, crop prices, drought or heavy rainfall will also help determine how individual farms fare.
The conversation also examines the broader economic effects. When farmers delay equipment purchases, reduce spending or struggle to remain profitable, the impact can spread to local businesses, workers and communities. Higher transportation and production costs may eventually reach consumers as well.
