You’re powering local stories that matter
See how your support fueled award-winning journalism in July.

Hello,
If you’re like me, you’re just settling into the idea that it’s now August and July passed in a blur of summer activities. While it felt lightning speed, July was a month of both recognition and impact for the North Dakota News Cooperative.
You’re supporting award-winning journalism

I’m proud to share that our reporter, Michael Standaert, was honored as a co-recipient of the Arthur E. Rowse Award for Excellence in Examining the News Media, presented by the National Press Club. This national recognition highlights the quality of investigative journalism happening right here in North Dakota, and it is a direct reflection of the support we receive from you, our donors.
You can hear all about the story that earned him the award in this episode of our podcast, The Backstory.
You’re powering in-depth reporting on issues that matter
Michael’s work this month continued that same high standard. In July, he reported on how federal cost-cutting measures threaten to dismantle senior volunteer programs that have quietly supported North Dakota’s elderly residents for decades. He also covered how innovative ranching projects are combining sustainable grazing practices with carbon capture methods that producers can embrace. These stories not only inform, they shine a light on solutions and challenges that shape life in our state.
You’re providing trusted answers to timely questions
We expanded our fact brief series in July, and published four new briefs that respond directly to timely public questions. These concise, verified pieces explored whether federal tax dollars pay for college for undocumented immigrants, how much wind energy North Dakota produces, how much of North Dakota’s wind energy is exported to other states, and whether North Dakota’s Nekoma Pyramid missile site was shut down after just one day. We’ve heard from several readers who are excited about the new fact briefs. We’ve also created a tip line, so you can easily share ideas.
You’re bridging the gap between journalism and community
Several community members have already invited me to speak at their gatherings, and I am always glad to say yes. I welcome the opportunity to visit with groups across North Dakota about topics such as media literacy, the role of nonprofit news, and the First Amendment. If your organization is interested, I would be happy to connect. Please email me at Sabrina@newscoopnd.org.
