Job Description – CEO
Reports to: Chair(s) of the board of directors
Compensation: Base salary range is $92,000 to $107,000 per year based on experience. Includes paid time off, a health insurance stipend with the amount to be negotiated prior to employment, and a retirement match up to 3%.
Description: The North Dakota News Cooperative CEO reports to the board of directors and oversees all aspects of the organization, including newsgathering, development and operations. Unique, in-depth, investigative and public service storytelling forms the foundation of the organization’s mission, so the CEO should have a strong background in journalism. He/she must demonstrate a commitment to accuracy, fairness and the highest personal and professional ethical standards. Must be able to set and manage the budget and lead fundraising efforts to ensure revenue covers operational expenses.
Responsibilities:
1.Strategic vision and execution: Co-create and implement a clear and measurable strategic plan with the board, staff and key stakeholders to increase journalistic excellence, extend and deepen audience engagement and enrich the team culture.
2.Content oversight: Challenge and guide staff to ensure high levels of journalistic excellence as the cornerstone of the organization to ultimately grow readership, engagement and support. This includes editing or arranging for editing of staff reporting, and may include occasional content creation.
3.Development: In coordination with the board of directors, design a fundraising plan, oversee execution of the fundraising plan, and actively raise major and annual gifts through enhanced relationships with readers, donors and foundations.
4.Organizational leadership: Implement the optimal organizational structure, ensure role clarity for each team member, and develop a culture of trust, accountability and engagement.
5.Brand integrity and marketing: Design and ensure execution of a brand and marketing strategy to increase brand awareness and engagement through effective messaging, community outreach, relationship building, strategic partnerships events and intentional calls to action.
6.Administrative and financial oversight: Enhance the health of the organization by utilizing efficient systems, appropriate internal controls, forecasting and transparent reporting.
7.Governance support: Support board leadership to engage a diverse and effective board of directors, leverage their strengths to advance the mission, plan meetings and provide the transparency necessary for effective governance.
Skills and qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. Proven results in fundraising, sales or strategic partnership building.
3. Experience managing journalistic programs and projects.
4. Ability to work effectively with a variety of people internally and externally.
5. Effective, diplomatic and clear communication style.
6. Ability to engage and educate community stakeholders in the vision of the organization.
7. Strong analytical, technical and decision-making skills.
8. Experience managing budgets.
9. Must live in North Dakota, work from home and be available to travel statewide.
10. Grant writing.
